  • First Dental Appointment in Headington, Oxford: A New Patient Guide

Looking for a new dentist in Headington, Oxford? John Miller Dental Practice on Windmill Road explains how to register, what your first appointment involves for adults and children, what it costs and how to find us.

    📍 6A The Parade, Windmill Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 7BL | 📞 01865 308050

Whether you’re booking for yourself, your child, or the whole family, a first dental appointment is easier when you know what to expect. This guide explains how it works at John Miller Dental Practice on Windmill Road in Headington, with a section for each situation, from adults to children, nervous patients and anyone who needs to think about access.

Short answer: Your first appointment is a thorough dental examination. We’ll talk through your health and concerns, check your teeth, gums and mouth, take X-rays if they’re needed, explain what we find and agree a plan with you.

    Booking and Registering

Call us on 01865 308050 or use the contact form on our contact page, and tell us whether you’re a new patient. Let us know if you’re in pain, if you’re nervous, and whether you’d like NHS or private care.

We’re open Monday and Tuesday 8am to 5pm, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30am to 4:30pm, and Friday 8am to 4pm.

    NHS or Private?

We’re both a private and an NHS dentist. You can have some treatments on the NHS and others privately, but not both within the same course of treatment. NHS charges are set nationally, so ask us for current prices, and check when you call whether NHS appointments are currently available.

Private care offers a wider range, including cosmetic work such as smile design, cosmetic bonding, teeth whitening and porcelain veneers, as well as dental implants and root canal treatment. See our private dentist page for more.

Payment is due at the end of each appointment, by cash or card. If you pay privately, we offer finance (including 0% for patients who qualify) and dental plan membership. See our membership plans page. Please note that cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice, and missed appointments, are charged at 50% of the fee.

    For Adults

    At your first appointment, we’ll:

    • Talk through your medical and dental history, any medication, and what’s brought you in
    • Examine your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, including a check for signs of mouth cancer
    • Take X-rays if they’re needed
    • Explain what we’ve found, what needs attention and what can wait, and your options

You’ll leave with a clear plan, and we’ll always tell you what treatment involves and costs before you decide. If you’d like to talk about your smile, mention it when you book. For gum health and regular cleaning, see our oral hygiene page.

    For Children

We’re a family practice, and we’re experienced in helping children feel comfortable at the dentist. Early visits help children get used to the surroundings and build good habits. They can look around, and sit in the chair, before the dentist examines their mouth. Prevention is much better than treatment, so bringing your child along for regular check-ups gives them the best start. See our family dental care page.

    For the Whole Family

You’re welcome to book family members together, where possible, and ask us about arranging appointments around school and work.

    If You’re Nervous

Dental anxiety is very common, and we won’t judge. Tell us when you book, and we’ll go at your pace. We offer sedation options and relaxation techniques to help you feel comfortable.

If You Have Urgent Dental Pain

Call us on 01865 308050 and tell us what’s happened. We offer urgent appointments for dental emergencies, including a child’s knocked-out tooth. If you have spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or feel very unwell, seek urgent medical help through NHS 111 or 999.

Access: Please Read Before You Come

Our practice is on the first floor. There’s a stair lift for those with limited mobility, but please be aware that there are steps with handrails into the building and into the waiting room. If you have any concerns, call us beforehand, and we’ll talk it through with you.
